And we'll definitely be back.
We hired a driver on a daily basis for our time here - cost per day - about $10 US and damn was he happy!
Best quote from our driver - after the first day (admittedly after weeks of studying maps) - we started telling him which way to go to get around the city, whereupon he turned to us and said accusingly "YOU EGYPTIAN!"
After a few panicked seconds crusing down the crowded streets he looked back at the road and told us "It's normal. Everyone comes to Cairo and then they remember. Everyone was Egyptian once".
Maybe he had a point.
Mutant, Cairo, Egypt, December 25th 2003 (our driver was always stopping off at these sleazy cafes and smoking a mixture of tobacco and hashish. Of course I took advantage of the situation to talk to him about a real computer. He bought a Macintosh the day before we left. He was so happy...)
Pyramids at Giza and Shaqqar There are no less than 97 pyramids in Egypt. We only saw six of them in two fields that were close to Cairo.
The Cities of the Dead There are two milllion people buried in Cairo. About 300,000 folks squat in the cemeteries there - the so called Cities of the Dead.
Coptic, or Christian Cairo The Holy Family spent time here. So did we, on Christmas day no less!
Islamic Cairo The best and most interesting part of the city. I've spent a lot of time in Africa and The Middle East, in really, really dangerous places but I never felt threatened here. Folks were genuniely nice. I got really sick in Lagos last summer and figured I wouldn't have a problem so I ate from the street stalls and when those people saw me eating what they ate (unlike most tourists), they gave us free stuff (my friend couldn't eat the food and didn't know what she was missing...)
Content prepared at The Four Seasons hotel in Cairo, Egypt.
The have broadband in every room. Mutant always stays at a Four Seasons if there is one in town - they rock! And the suites are all the same no matter where you are, so you don't have to turn the lights on the find the bathroom at night....
An Apple G4 PowerBook was not harmed during the creation of these web pages, although when Mutant was riding horses around the Pyramids it felt very, very nervous indeed lest he fall off!
All photos taken with a Nikon Cool Pix 5700, a five megapixel ass kicking digital camera.
iTunes provided the nightly sound; after all, who the hell wants to get woken up by the Call to Prayer from the nearby Mosque?!???
And no, we don't receive any cash from Apple Computer for mentioning their products in our web pages; its just that if you don't own or use a Mac, well, this is a special message just for you, you poor misguided souls...
you know what this is so deal with it....bitch
